Book Empire Vol. 14

All the book news you need to know, on a need-to-know basis.

We understand how busy you are and how difficult it is to keep up with all the book news that’s being thrown at you every day. To make your life a little easier, we’ll compound the most important bits into 1 blog post every week, exactly telling you what you need to know. Please don’t worry your pretty little head about the possibility of propaganda or censorship. We’ll do that for you.

Anyone who has ever seen an episode of Gilmore Girls knows that Rory is an avid reader. But did you also know that she reads 339 books on screen? You can now do the Rory Challenge to see how many of these books you’ve actually read.
I have so much reading to catch up on!

J.K. Rowling is at it again! No she didn’t write a new thriller and no definitely not a new Harry Potter book, but she did write you a textbook on the history of Quidditch. Read it at Pottermore and then head over to these new details for expansion details to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Murakami is being a busy bee lately. His latest book came out not that long ago (and is still awaiting publication in English), but he already announced a new short story collection coming to Japan in April. It’s been nine years since his last one and we are going to have to wait and see if he stepped up his game.
And of course it will only be a matter of time before it will be translated in English/Dutch.

The internet is into covers right now. Take a look at these beautiful re-imagined covers for well-known books and feel disappointed about the boring Dover Editions you might own yourself. Then look at the Academy of British Cover Design for the prettiest covers of 2013 so you can feel good again about all the pretty new books winking at you from your book closet.

Even though I don’t really understand it, George R.R. Martin has a plan to prevent HBO from catching up with his writing.
Beware of the spoilers further down the article!

My favourite thing this week was an audio-excerpt from B.J. Novak’s short story collection One More Thing. And although I have already heard wonderful things about the audiobook, I was still blown away by this small story narrated by Jason Schwartzman, Katy Perry and Novak himself.
It also has kids singing!
